Former walk-on quarterback Mason McClendon will forgo the final season of his playing career and take a student assistant coaching position while offensive lineman Alex Fontana and running back Kaliq Kokuma will forgo their final seasons at Houston after receiving undergraduate degrees.
McClendon saw action in 13 games over the last two seasons as Houston's holder on field goals and extra points. Fontana had appeared in 11 games in 2016 but did not play in 2017 due to an injury while Kokuma saw action in seven games over 2015 and 2016, rushing seven times for 22 yards.
Across the offensive line, Houston returns 11 student-athletes with a combined 143 games of experience, including six combining for 94 career starts. It also welcomes four new additions as part of its 2018 signing class, including midyear junior college transfer Bo Alexander.
At running back, Houston returns three of its top five running backs from 2017, and a fourth with starting experience in Kevrin Justice. The Cougars also added a running back as part of its 2018 signing class in DeSoto High School product Kelan Walker.
