PALM HARBOR, Fla. â€" The University of Houston Men's Golf program lowered its score for the second straight day to finish sixth with a total of 875 in the American Athletic Conference Championships on Tuesday afternoon at Innisbrook Golf Club.
The Cougars posted a total of 1-over 285 on the 7,125-yard, par-71 Copperhead Course in the Final Round on Tuesday to move up two places in the final standings.
For the second straight day, senior Michael Perras led the Cougars with a 1-under 70 and tied for eighth at 215. It was the Deer Park, Texas, native's third straight finish among the Top-10 leaders at The American Championships.
After starting his Final Round with a bogey on No. 10, Perras rallied with a birdie on the par-5 11th hole and sandwiched a bogey on No. 16 with birdies on No. 15 and No. 17.
Despite a bogey early in his second nine on No. 2, Perras recorded six straight pars and then made birdie on the par-3 eighth hole.
Sophomore Zach Tracy finished with an even-par 71 Tuesday and tied for 13th at 217. The Houston native started his day red hot with three straight birdies at Nos. 10-12 on the way to a career-best finish in his second American Championships.
Sophomore George Gardner tied for 24th at 221 in his American Championships debut, while junior Matt Williams tied for 36th at 225. Competing in his final American Athletic Conference Championships, senior Papito Gonzalez tied for 39th at 226.
No. 21 USF captured the team championship with a score of 842, while SMU finished second at 862. UCF (865), Memphis (871) and Cincinnati (873) rounded out the Top-5 leaders with ECU (877), Temple (882), UConn (885) and Wichita State (892) completing the field.
USF's Claudio Correa earned medalist honors with a three-day total of 6-under 207. Teammates Cristian DiMarco and Jimmy Jones joined Cincinnati's Davis Baxter in a tie for second at 210 with SMU teammates Gray Townsend and McClure Meissner tying for fifth at 213.
