AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Behind the stellar play of senior Michael Perras, the University of Houston Men's Golf program finished in a tie for second at the 3M Augusta Invitational with a score of 10-under 854 on Sunday afternoon at Forest Hills Golf Club.
Perras, who is the defending American Athletic Conference Championships medalist, drained eight birdies, including six in a 7-hole stretch midway through the Final Round, on the way to a 66 Sunday. The Deer Park, Texas, native finished in a tie for sixth at 5-under 211.
Perras was one of three Cougars to finish under par on Sunday. Freshman Alexander Frances posted a 70 on the 7,005-yard, par-72 course to tie for 25th at 216, while sophomore Zach Tracy finished with a 71 to move into a tie for 12th at 213.
The Cougars posted the third-lowest round of the day at 8-under-280 and finished the 54-hole event at 10-under 854. No. 13 Illinois captured the team championship at 839.
Following Houston, No. 28 Wake Forest (854), No. 9 (Division II) South Carolina-Aiken (858), Kennesaw State (858), Tennessee (860), No. 38 South Carolina (862), Georgia State (862), No. 9 UCF (869) and New Mexico (870) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Starting his day on No. 1, Perras began on the right foot with a birdie. Despite a bogey on No. 3, he regained that stroke with a birdie on No. 6 and then sank another birdie on No. 9 to cap his front nine and start an impressive stretch.
After his birdie on No. 9, Perras followed that with a birdie on the 410-yard, par-4 10th hole and added a par on No. 11. He then proceeded to sink four straight birdies on the way to his team-leading ninth round of the 60s this season.
Perras joined Mark Lawrence (Virginia Tech) and Nick Hardy (Illinois) in a tie for sixth.
Like Perras, Frances began his day with a birdie on No. 1 and then overcame a bogey at No. 7 with the team's lone eagle of the day at No. 9. The Stege, Denmark, native added another birdie on No. 17.
Tracy earned his third top-20 finish of the season after sinking five birdies Sunday. After making a pair of birdies on his front nine, the Houston native drained three birdies in a 5-hole stretch on his back nine to move into a tie for 12th at 213.
Sophomore George Gardner tied for 17th at 214, while junior Matt Williams tied for 61st at 226.
Illinois' Dylan Meyer earned medalist honors with a score of 11-under 205 to finish one stroke ahead of Tennessee's Lorenzo Scalise. Augusta's Broc Everett finished third at 208.
UP NEXT
Dismuke recently announced that sophomores Sam Elkington, Pryce Beshoory and Tony Gil and redshirt freshman Andrew Gibson would compete as individuals at the Bearkat Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State beginning Monday morning at Walden Lake Conroe.
Following the 3M Augusta Invitational, the Cougars will compete as a team in their regular-season finale at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, on April 7-8.
From there, Houston takes its first step into the postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships on April 22-24 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Perras looks to defend his American Athletic Conference Championships individual title from a year ago. With that championship, he became the first Cougar in program history to win NCAA Regional and conference championships titles during his career.
