Houston Claims Five Events on Final Day

HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field teams saved the best day of competition for last, winning five events including three individual and two relays on the final day of the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Nora Monie picked up right where she left of on Friday, winning her second event of the Texas Relays, this time the women's discus. Monie entered the finals in eighth, before using her first attempt of the final throws to mark 168-10 (51.47m). Monie would leave no doubt and extend her lead on the next attempt, throwing 170-3 (51.91m) to win the event and improve on her already, No. 2 mark in program history.
Monie's mark moves her into a tie for 31st in the NCAA this season and completed the sweep of her events on the weekend, after she won the shot put on Friday.
Houston rode Monie's momentum into the running events, where the men's team put on a show in the 4x200-meter relay. The squad of Amere Lattin, Cameron Burrell, Kahmari Montgomery and Elijah Hall raced the 800-meter relay in 1:21.20, with Hall storming from behind on the anchor leg to top LSU (1:21.48).
The 4x100-meter relay proved to be just as exciting for the men, with the Cougars again running down the Tigers on the anchor leg. Burrell anchored the team of John Lewis III, Hall and Nick Alexander and stormed down the back stretch to edge LSU 38.915 to 38.919.
Burrell followed on the straight track with a win in the Men's Invitational 100-meter dash. Burrell ran the second heat of the final in 10.01 to edge out Cordero Gray (10.07) and Tevin Hester (10.09).
Hall made it a clean sweep in the invitational sprints for the Cougars with a victory in the Men's Invitational 200-meter dash. Hall, the American Record holder in the indoor 200, finished the half-lap race in a wind-legal 20.11 to move to No. 1 in the NCAA this season and set a Texas Relays record with the time.
Lattin returned to the track later in the afternoon as Houston's first individual competitor in the running events. After qualifying with the ninth-fastest time in the prelims on Friday, Lattin came back to run a wind-aided 13.72 to finish fifth. Lattin's time moves him to No. 7 in the NCAA this season.
Houston picked up a pair of top-10 finishes in the women's and men's long jump. After two long fouls on the women's side, Samiyah Samuels snuck into the finals on her third attempt, before improving to 20-2.5 (6.16m) on her fourth attempt to take sixth. For the men, Antwan Dickerson's first attempt traveled a wind-aided 25-5.25 (7.75m) to take eighth and move to No. 13 in the NCAA this season.
Felipe Valencia earned a top-5 finish for the Cougars in the throws after taking fourth in the `A' section of the shot put. Valencia used his final throw to set a season-best at 59-4.75 (18.10m) and move to No. 23 in the NCAA this season.
The Cougar men wrapped the competition in the 4x400-meter relay, where they ran a season-best 3:07.81 to finish sixth.
Following the meet, Houston was named the Men's Team of the Meet, while Hall was named the Male Track Athlete of the Meet.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars return home to host the Houston Alumni Invitational at Tom Tellez Track. The two-day event runs across April 6-7 and will precede Houston Football's Spring Game and Houston Baseball's American Athletic Conference matchup against USF.
