PALM CITY, Fla. â€" Competing against one of the nation's elite fields, the University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in 14th place after the First Round at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Sunday evening.
The Cougars posted a score of 296 on the 7,114-yard, par-72 course at Floridian National Golf Club. The tournament field features six of the country's Top-20 programs â€" including each of the Top Three â€" and 13 of the Top 50.
No. 1 Oklahoma State posted a score of 7-under 277 to grab the First-Round team lead, while No. 2 Texas A&M was in second at 281. No. 22 Wake Forest (283), No. 9 Baylor (284), No. 37 Duke (286), No. 23 Florida State (286), No. 3 Georgia Tech (287), No. 12 LSU (287), No. 16 Arkansas (288) and No. 20 USF (289) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Wake Forest's Parker Gillam stood atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a 5-under 66 in Sunday's round. Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland, Texas A&M's Dan Erickson and Baylor's Matthew Perrine were tied for second at 67, while Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans was in fifth with a 68.
Houston junior Matt Williams posted a 72 Sunday to lead the Cougars and tie for 25th. Starting his day on No. 3, the Calgary, Alberta, native was 4-over par through 12 holes but drained three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17 and ended his day with three straight pars to pace the Cougars.
Sophomore Zach Tracy was tied for 36th at 73, while senior Michael Perras and sophomore Pryce Beshoory â€" playing as an individual â€" were tied for 49th at 74. Sophomore George Gardner and freshman Alexander Frances â€" competing as an individual â€" were tied for 68th at 77, while senior Papito Gonazlez stood in a tie for 78th at 78. Junior Carson Cavner finished the day in 86th at 81.
Teams will play 18 holes each day starting Sunday and running through Tuesday on the 7,114-yard, par-71 course.

SECOND ROUND on MONDAY
Monday's Second Round begins with a 7:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start. The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Texas and Lamar.
Williams will be in the first group off No. 13 beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) with Perras (first group off No. 14), Tracy (second group off No. 14), Gonzalez (first group off No. 15) and Gardner (second group off No 15) following.
Beshoory will start off No 16 with Frances in the first group off No. 17 and Cavner in the first group off No. 18.
UP NEXT
Following the Valspar Collegiate Championships, the Cougars will travel to compete at the 3M Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., on April 1-2.
From there, Houston will send student-athletes to compete as individuals at the Golden Nugget Invitational in Lake Charles, La., on March 26-27.
Houston will return to team competition in its regular-season finale at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, on April 7-8.
