SPRING, Texas â€" University of Houston freshman Alexander Frances fired a 64 in the Second Round to grab the individual lead at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational with a score of 10-under 134 on Monday at Augusta Pines Golf Club.
Frances was one of four Cougars competing as individuals. Sophomore teammate Pryce Beshoory stood in second at 8-under 136, while redshirt freshman Andrew Gibson â€" making his collegiate debut â€" was tied for 21st at 144. Sophomore Sam Elkington was tied for 38th at 149.
After shooting 70 in the First Round on Monday morning, Frances played bogey-free golf in the afternoon to become the eighth player in school history to shoot 64 or better in a round. He became the first Cougar to go that low since current teammate Michael Perras fired a 63 in the First Round at the HBU Husky Intercollegiate on Sept. 21, 2015.
Starting on No. 16, Frances opened with consecutive pars before draining five birdies in a six-hole stretch. He started his run with a birdie on No. 18 and added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1-2 before going back-to-back again on Nos. 4-5.
Frances closed the front nine with a birdie on the par-3 ninth hole and added back-to-back birdies for the third time on Nos. 11-12.
Frances stood two strokes ahead of teammate Pryce Beshoory, who fired back-to-back rounds in the 60s Monday.
In the morning round, Beshoory started his day on No. 15 and sank four birdies in a five-hole stretch late on the back nine and early on the front nine.
In the afternoon, he overcame his lone bogey of the round on No. 17 with back-to-back birdies on No. 18- and No. 1. He added birdies on No. 3 and No. 5 and sank back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12-13 to finish the day at 136.
Making his collegiate debut after sitting out a year ago as a redshirt, Gibson overcame his lone bogey in the first round on No. 4 with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole and added another birdie on No. 14 for his first sub-par round.
Bradley held the team lead at 566 to stand one stroke ahead of Abilene Christian. UTRGV (576), Northern Colorado (577) and Weber State (580) rounded out the top-five leaders.
FINAL ROUND
The tournament concludes with an 8 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday. Elkington will go off No. 17 with Gibson (No. 16), Beshoory (No. 15) and Frances (first group off No. 14) following.
