Last Week
Houston Men's Basketball Head Coach asked, via social media, for head coaches to donate 20 shirts and 10 pairs of shoes to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The initiative has fueled more than 1,300 commitments, and head coaches from other respective Houston coaches have joined the cause. Houston Football joined with Baylor, North Texas, SMU, the University of Texas at Austin, Texas State and Texas Tech, to lead a "Texas Is United" caravan shuttling supplies from Austin to Houston. In addition, multiple Houston programs joined in the cleanup effort in flooded neighborhoods as all Houston Athletics events scheduled were cancelled or postponed. For ways to donate, click here.

Houston Men's Basketball will hold a walk-on informational meeting at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 6, inside Guy V. Lewis Development Facility … Information and forms needed for the walk-on meeting can be found here … Season tickets for the 2017-18 campaign are on sale for fans … To enjoy 15 regular-season home games, fans can purchase Reserved season tickets for $200, while General Admission tickets are available for only $100 at … Current season-ticket holders can visit and follow the appropriate links to renew their season tickets online at any time … As the former Hofheinz Pavilion is transformed into the $60-million Fertitta Center, the Cougars will play most of their 2017-18 home games inside Health & PE Arena on the campus of nearby Texas Southern University.

Head Coach Major Applewhite held his annual press conference Monday … Transcribed quotes can be found here … Based off a player vote, Houston announced its four captains for the 2017 season as senior linebacker Matthew Adams, senior running back Dillon Birden, junior defensive back Garrett Davis and senior receiver Steven Dunbar were chosen by their teammates to lead the #HTownTakeover this fall … Linell Bonner, Steven Dunbar and Nick Thurman have been named to the Senior Bowl watch list … The watch list is made up of student-athletes from across the nation up for consideration of invitations to the 2018 Senior Bowl on Jan. 27, 2018 in Mobile, Ala. … Bonner led Houston with 98 receptions for 1,118 yards and three touchdowns in 2016 … He leads all returning receivers in The American and is second among all returners nationally with 98 receptions in 2016, a number that ranked fifth nationally last season … Dunbar had 53 receptions for 692 yards and five touchdowns in 2016 … The Metairie, La., native has 26 career starts with action in 39 career games and currently ranks 30th on the Houston career receptions chart with 104 receptions … Bonner and Dunbar make up the top returning pass-catching duo in The American with 151 receptions and the second-best duo nationally … The two trail only Middle Tennessee State's Richie James and Ty Lee who combined for 168 receptions in 2016 … Thurman has seen action in 32 career games with seven career starts, six of which came in 2016 when he finished third on the Houston team with his five quarterback hurries to go along with 5.5 tackles for loss while playing on a three-man defensive line … He finished the year with 26 tackles and two sacks along with two pass breakups … The Major Applewhite Radio Show, hosted by sideline reporter Jeremy Branham, will be held during the lunch hour at Ragin' Cajun at 4302 Richmond Ave., this season … The lunch hour will begin at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 6, with Applewhite's weekly show being taped to air on KPRC 950 AM every Wednesday night during game weeks at 7 p.m. … The show will also air live from 1-2 p.m. on the Tune-In Radio app … The #HTownTakeover lunch hour will take place every Wednesday of game weeks, except for the two weeks with Thursday games in which case the lunch hour will occur at noon on Tuesday … Those Tuesdays are set for Oct. 17 and Nov. 21.

The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field teams closed their representation of the United States at the World University Games in Taipei.

Senior sprinter Cameron Burrell earned Houston's first medal of the World University Games after claiming bronze in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.27on Thursday, in Taipei … On Monday, the Cougars wrapped the Universidad with a pair of silver medals in the relays … The team of John Lewis III, LeShon Collins, Jacarias Martin and Burrell raced around the track in 38.69, falling just four-hundredths of a second shy of the gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay … Amere Lattin, Curtis Brown, Jordan Clarke (Webber International) and Kahmari Montgomery ran 3:06.68 to earn the silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay … Sophomore Samiyah Samuels finished seventh in the long jump with a bound of 19-11.5 (6.08m) … Alum Tori Williams ran 24.03 to take eighth in the 200-meter dash … Senior distance runner Brian Barraza finished the 5,000-meter run in 14:19.37 to finish 11th … Senior Tonye'cia Burks jumped 41-0.5 (12.51m) to place 12th in the women's triple jump … Sophomore Justice Henderson jumped 16-10.0 (5.13m) to finish 26th in the long jump. In the throws, senior Cameron Cornelius wrapped the shot put with a 12th-place finish after a mark of 57-4.25 (17.48m), while juniors Mikaela Martin, 172-11 (52.71m), and Taylor Scaife, 168-5 (51.34m), took 18th and 19th in the women's hammer throw, respectively … In all, 22 Cougar student-athletes and alumni represent the Cougars on the USA Team.

Houston opens its 2017 home slate with the eighth annual Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup, welcoming McNeese, Mississippi State and Stetson to Houston over Sept. 8-9 … Following the final match on Sept. 9, the Cougars will host a free clinic for children eighth grade and under … 2017 marks the seventh straight season the Cougars have hosted the tournament in honor of Houston great Flo Hyman … A native of Los Angeles, Hyman was the first female scholarship athlete at the University of Houston … Hyman was a three-time AIAW All-America honoree for the Cougars from 1974-76 and the 1976 AIAW National Player of the Year, leading Houston to two Top-5 national finishes … She skipped her final year to join the U.S. National Team in 1975 … Hyman, along with fellow Cougars Rita Buck-Crockett and Rose Magers, led the U.S. to a silver medal in 1984 Summer Olympics â€" still tied for the best indoor finish in U.S. Olympic history … Standing at 6-5, she was the tallest outside hitter in the women's game … She possessed a 110-mph spike … Hyman was consistently counted among the top players in the world before her death during a 1986 match in Japan, where she played professionally … Hyman was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1988 and was a University of Houston Hall of Honor inductee in 1998 … In 2012, Sports Illustrated named her as one of the top 40 female athletes of the Title IX era … She as well as Buck-Crockett and Wade Phillips were 2017 inductees to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
