Houston Places 175 on American All-Academic Team

HOUSTON â€" The American Athletic Conference released its 2016-17 All-Academic Team and the University of Houston's focus on building Champions for Life was evident as 175 student-athletes were named to the team after posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2016-17 academic year.

To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in an American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
Among Houston's teams, Women's Cross Country/Track and Field led the way with 27 honorees, while Men's Cross Country/Track and Field was second with 25 honorees. Swimming & Diving rounded out the top three with 24 honorees.
These were only the latest academic honors that Houston student-athletes received from The American. On Wednesday, Women's Golf standout Megan Thothong and Men's Indoor Track and Field star Brian Barraza received the 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards for their respective sports.
On Tuesday, the Houston Softball program received the 2016-17 Team Academic Excellence Award for posting a team GPA of 3.54, the highest among all softball programs in the league.
In March, Diver Micaela Bouter was named the league's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Bouter, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, will receive a $4,000 scholarship to apply to her postgraduate or professional studies. She is the second winner from Houston in the last three years, joining former volleyball standout Kadi Kullerkann, who won in 2015.
