Postseason Continues at NCAA West Regional

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field teams will send 21 athletes to compete at the NCAA West Regional to be held May 25-27 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Houston qualified 21 athletes for the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championship to compete in 27 events and three relays. The athletes' season-best times are taken into account for qualification with the top-48 in each event, and top-24 relay teams in each region booking their tickets to one of the two prelim sites.
A trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be on the line in Austin. Each running event under 3,000-meters will be divided into first round and quarterfinal sections with the top-12 athletes after the quarterfinal rounds advancing to Eugene, Ore., on June 7-10. Each field event will consist of a 3-attempt first round to determine the top-12 to advance.
Thursday's action begins with the women's hammer throw and pole vault, as well as the men's javelin, at 11 a.m. First round action of the running events begins with the women's 400-meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m., and runs through the semifinals of the men's 10,000-meter run at 9:40. The first round of the 1,500-meter run, 100- and 400-meter dash and 800-meter runs will also be held on the opening day.
A noon start time kicks off the action on Friday with the women's discus and men's pole vault. The men's and women's straight-track hurdles open running events at 4:30 p.m., while the quarterfinal rounds of Thursday's running events as well as the first round of the 200-meter dash will all be contested. Second-day action concludes with the quarterfinals of the women's steeplechase at 8:20 p.m.
Saturday marks the final day of the NCAA West Regional which will be highlighted with each of the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays to open and end the running events. The quarterfinals of the 1,500-meter run as well as the straight-track hurdles, and the 200-meter dash will all be contested, while the 5,000-meter run will be the last individual tickets punched in running events. Field events kick off the final day of action with the men's discus at 1 p.m., and will run through the women's triple jump at 6 p.m.
