HOUSTON â€" Hurdler Amere Lattin and jumper Tonye'cia Burks have been named American Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week after their performances at the Victor Lopez Classic, the league office announced Tuesday.
LATTIN'S BACK-TO-BACK HONORS
Lattin claimed his second consecutive weekly track award after posting the No. 6 time nationally in the 110-meter hurdles. Running the event for the first time this season, Lattin crossed in a wind-legal 13.91 to finish second in the event.
Lattin was back on the track to wrap the weekend as the anchor leg of the 4x100-meter relay. The sophomore anchored the Cougars who ran 39.37 and clocked the third fastest time in the NCAA this season. With his effort, Lattin now has two top-10 national times this season after running 20.86 to rank ninth in the 200-meter dash, as well as ranking inside the top-10 on two separate 4x100 squads.
The award for Lattin is his third career weekly honor, after being named track athlete of the week last week and during the indoor season, on Feb. 14.
BURKS JUMPS TO HISTORY
After an indoor season that culminated in an American Conference championship in the triple jump, Burks has carried that momentum into the outdoor slate. Burks trailed Cybil Obiozor heading into the final jump, where he unleashed a record-setting leap. The junior flew 43-5.0 (13.23m) to win the competition and break Caresir Hamilton's top mark of 43-4.5 (13.22m) set in 2006. Burks' jump moved her to No. 2 on the NCAA list this season.
The award for Burks is the first of her career.
COUGAR AWARDS
Houston has now won a combined 14 Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Junior Cameron Cornelius has taken home a field award in each of the indoor and outdoor seasons, while Tori Williams has won three track awards this season (two indoor, one outdoor). Junior Cameron Burrell earned two track and one field awards during the indoor season, while Brian Barraza and Eli Hall each took track awards.
