Action began early Friday morning with the men's and women's hammer throw. On the men's side, senior Damon Thompson threw 188-1 (57.33m) to finish fifth, while freshman Curtis Dalton's 146-6 (44.66m) placed him 12th. The women followed, and sophomore Mikaila Martin threw 168-0 (51.21m) to place sixth.
The Cougars took to the track for the first time with the early sections of the 1,500-meter run. With one section remaining on Saturday, freshman Nicholas Hamilton paced the men in seventh with a time of 3:59.85, while Maddie Brown turned in the women's fastest time in 10th at 4:52.12.
Houston picked up its top performance of the first day in the final event of the night, the women's 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Jahnavi Schneider finished the 12.5 lap race in 17:12.94 to finish second overall and first among collegiate competitors.
Friday's 10,000-meter race was cut short due to lightning in the area and will resume at 8 a.m., Saturday. The remainder of the final day of the Victor Lopez Classic begins at 10 a.m., with the men's shot put, women's discus and men's and women's long jumps, while running events will kick off at 11 a.m.
