HOUSTON â€" With the indoor season in the rear-view mirror, the Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field teams set their sights on the outdoor season with the Cougar Spring Break Invitational on Thursday, at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
ABOUT THE COUGAR SPRING BREAK INVITATIONAL
Thursday, March 16 | Houston, Texas | Throws: 10 a.m. | Running: 1 p.m.
TEAMS COMPETING: Houston, Rice, Texas State, Harvard
Fresh off a win at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, the Cougar men will open their defense of the 2016 outdoor crown on Thursday. The men are scheduled to compete with a full slate, opening with the javelin at 10 a.m.
The Houston women will hope to continue momentum from a strong finish at the American Indoor Championships, where they jumped from ninth in 2016 to third overall. The women also open throwing competition in the outdoor season at 10 a.m., with the hammer throw.
Running events begin with the women's 3,000-meter run at 1 p.m., and the always exciting 4x100-meter relay will follow at 1:30 p.m. For each event, the women will run first followed by the men.
ABOUT THE 2017 OUTDOOR COUGARS
The men return a pair of student-athletes who won individual conference titles a year ago, including sophomore Amere Lattin who swept the 110- and 400-meter hurdle titles in 2016 while also running the opening leg of the champion 4x400-meter relay squad. Junior Cameron Burrell also returns as the defending champion in the long jump.
On the women's side, senior distance runner Selena Sierra enters her senior season as the defending champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sierra used a dramatic, comeback finish heading into the final hurdle to break the school record in Orlando last season.
