TUCSON, Ariz.â€" University of Houston sophomore Leonie Harm fired a bogey-free, First-Round 66 to set a school record and lead the Cougars during the First Round of the MountainView Collegiate on Friday morning at MountainView Golf Club.
Competing on the 6,210-yard, par 72 course, Harm started her day off No. 1 with four straight pars before sinking her first birdie on the par-4 fifth hole.
After three more pars, she closed out her front nine with another birdie on the par-5 ninth hole and followed with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10-11. The Gerlingen, Germany, native made par on Nos. 12-13 and sank birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 before closing out her round.
Harm stood one stroke back of Arizona's Wanasa Zhou, who opened with a 65, and finished one stroke ahead of Krystal Quihuis (Arizona), Brenda Gonzalez (Central Arkansas) and Emma Allen (Missouri).
She bested the previous Houston low round by two strokes. The previous record of 68 was first set by junior Megan Thothong during the Final Round of the UNF Collegiate on March 10, 2016.
That mark was equaled by junior Yuki Kajiki during the Final Round of the American Championships on April 21, 2015; by Raegan Bremer during the Final Round of the Mason Rudolph Championships on Sept. 20, 2015; and, most recently again by Kajiki again during the Final Round of the Jim West Challenge on Oct. 6, 2015.
Behind Harm's performance, the Cougars posted a score of 291 to finish the First Round in fourth. Arizona held the first-day lead at 278, while New Mexico State was in second at 289 with UNLV in third at 290.
Following the Cougars, Missouri (292), Kansas State (292), Central Arkansas (294), Mississippi (296), Oklahoma (299), Middle Tennessee (307) and North Texas (307) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Houston junior Ivon Reijers joined Harm among the top-20 individual leaders and was tied for 17th at 73. Thothong stood in a tie for 35th with a 75, while juniors Allie Andersen and Courtney Tibiletti were tied for 49th at 77.
