VALENTINE, Neb. â€" University of Houston senior Michael Perras posted five birdies and a pair of eagles on the way to a 7-under 65 to lead the Cougars during the Final Round of The Jackrabbit at The Prairie Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Competing as an individual on the 7,549-yard, par-72 layout, Perras started his day off No. 10 on a hot streak. The 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships medalist made birdie on No. 10 and followed with an eagle on the 364-yard, par-4 11th hole.
Despite a bogey on the 12th hole, Perras rallied with birdies on two of his final four holes to cap his first nine. He endured his final bogey of the day on the second hole but rallied with his fourth birdie of the day on the third hole and sank his second eagle of the round on the 542-yard, par-5 sixth hole.
Perras finished the tournament with a birdie on No. 18 for a 65 and surged into a tie for third at 11-under 205. It was the ninth top-five finish of his career.
Perras also tied for the eighth-lowest round in Houston history. He tied the school record with a 63 in the First Round of the HBU Husky Intercollegiate on Sept. 21, 2015, and first posted a 65 in the First Round at the NCAA Franklin Regional on May 16, 2016.
The Cougars tied for seventh as a team with a 54-hole score of 849. Houston posted a score of 2-under 286 in Tuesday's Final Round, its third straight sub-par round at The Jackrabbit.
Santa Clara captured the team title with a score of 39-under 825 to finish three strokes ahead of Tennessee. Kansas (834), Boise State (841) and South Carolina (841) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
Individually, Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh earned medalist honors with a score of 15-under 201. Tennessee's Rhys Nevin-Wharton finished second at 202, while Perras joined South Carolina's Scott Stevens and Daniel Hudson of Kansas in the group at 205.
Sophomore Zach Tracy posted his second sub-par round of the tournament with a 69 Tuesday. The Houston native started his day on a rough note with a bogey off No. 1 but returned to even par with his first birdie on No. 6.
Tracy started his back nine well with a birdie on the 637-yard, par-5 10th hole. Although he bogeyed No. 12, Tracy closed out his tournament with three birdies on his final six holes to tie for 28th at 3-under 213.
Senior and 2017 All-American Athletic Conference honoree Papito Gonzalez and junior Matt Williams joined Tracy in a tie for 28th at 213. For the third straight day, Williams fired a 1-under 71, overcoming a double bogey early in his Final Round to sink a pair of birdies in a six-hole stretch.
Making his collegiate debut, Alexander Frances tied for 44th at even-par 216, joining senior Alan De Bondt.
Playing as individuals, sophomore George Gardner tied for 51st at 217, while sophomore Tony Gil tied for 58th at 218.
