DALLAS â€" University of Houston sophomore George Gardner posted consecutive sub-par rounds to tie for 11th following the first 36 holes of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Monday evening at Royal Oaks Country Club.
Gardner opened the tournament with a 69 in the morning round on the 7,068-yard, par-71 course and followed that with a 70 for a total of 3-under 139.
Starting his day on No. 17, the Southlake, Texas, native wasted little time in moving under par, sinking a birdie on the 512-yard, par-5 18th hole in each round. Despite a pair of bogeys midway through each round, Gardner used a kick at the end to finish strong.
In each round, he birdied two of his final three holes. Gardner posted back-to-back efforts on Nos. 14-15 in the First Round and enjoyed birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 in the afternoon session.
As a team, the Cougars were tied for 12th with Charlotte at 584 after firing a pair of 292s as team.
