NEW ORLEANS â€" Senior sprinter/long jumper Cameron Burrell is receiving votes for the watch list of the prestigious Bowerman Award, collegiate track & field's highest individual honor, the USTFCCCA announced on Thursday.
Burrell is one of 17 track & field student-athletes to receive votes for the preseason watch list. The Bowerman is awarded to the top male and top female track & field athlete at the end of each season.
Burrell enters 2016-17 as a senior on the indoor circuit, while having two years of eligibility remaining for outdoor. He opened the indoor season with the fourth best long jump in the NCAA at the Reveille Invitational, where he leapt 24-7 (7.49m) to win the event.
The Houston native finished the 2016 indoor season with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships in the 60-meter dash. Burrell ran 6.48 at the championship meet to break the school record and fall just one-one hundredth of a second shy of the national title.
During the 2016 outdoor season, Burrell qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100-meter dash and as the anchor leg of the 4x100-meter relay. In his solo event, Burrell crossed the line fourth in 10.26, while the Cougars' 4x1 team finished as the runner up by two-hundredths of a second, with a school-record 38.44.
Burrell would go on to finish 25th in the United States Olympic Trials in the 100-meter dash to end his 2015-16 season.
