HOUSTON â€" Nine regular-season tournaments, including four during the fall semester and its first ever home event in the spring, highlight the University of Houston Women's Golf 2016-17 schedule, Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell announced Wednesday.
The Cougars, who are the defending American Athletic Conference champions, will compete in six states across three time zones from Florida to Arizona this season.
FALL SCHEDULE
The Cougars open the season Sept. 16-18 when they compete at the Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
From there, Houston will compete in three straight events in the Lone Star State. The Texas swing begins Oct. 9-10 with the Jim West Challenge on the Tom Fazio Championship Course at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.
The Cougars close out the month of October at The Alamo Invitational on Oct. 23-25 at Briggs Branch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas, and finish the fall schedule Nov. 7-8 at the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas.
SPRING SCHEDULE
Following the Christmas break, Houston begins the spring season with the AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship on Feb. 19-21 at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans.
The Cougars return home to play host to their first tournament with the start of The Dickson, to be held on the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club in The Woodlands, Texas, on Feb. 27-28.
That tournament is named in honor of Jim Dickson, who is retiring as director of golf at The Woodlands Country Club and has been a supporter of Houston Women's Golf through the years.
The prestigious field includes Florida State, Houston Baptist, Kent State, North Texas, Oklahoma, Purdue, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, Tulane, Tulsa, UNLV and UTSA.
While the rest of the University enjoys Spring Break, the Cougars will compete in a pair of tournaments in Arizona. That road trip begins March 10-12 with the MountainView Collegiate at Mountain View Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz., and continues with the Clover Cup on March 17-19 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
Houston wraps up the regular season when it competes at the Clemson Invitational on March 31-April 2 at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C.
POSTSEASON PLAY
With the completion of the regular season, the Cougars look to defend their American Athletic Conference Championships title when they tee off on The Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Golf & Spa Resort on April 16-18.
A year ago, the Cougars overcame a disappointing First Round team score to rally impressively over the final two days to win their first team conference title in school history.
From there, Houston will wait to learn its postseason fate. NCAA Regional play will be held May 8-10 at UNM Championship Course (Albuquerque, N.M.); Ironwood Golf and Country Club (Greenville, N.C.); The Rawls Course (Lubbock, Texas) and the Scarlet Course at Ohio State Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio).
The NCAA Championships will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
The Cougars return nine student-athletes from last year's squad, including All-American Athletic Conference performers Yuka Kajiki and Megan Thothong.
A year ago, Houston collected three team championships, including back-to-back titles at the UCF Challenge and UNF Collegiate, to open the spring season and saw Thothong and Emily Gilbreth earn co-medalist honors at the UNF Collegiate.
It was the second straight season in which Thothong won that tournament's title and was Gilbreth's first individual crown.
Harm joined the Cougars at the semester break a year ago and made an immediate impact, earning three top-20 finishes in a four-tournament stretch, including a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Junior transfer Allie Andersen (Colorado State) and freshman Amanda Elich join the Cougars as newcomers in 2016-17.
