Track to Host Tom Tellez Invitational

HOUSTON â€" The 2016 outdoor track & field season is on its final leg, as the Cougars return home to host the Tom Tellez Invitational in Houston's final tune up before the American Athletic Conference Championships, on Friday.
With most teams preparing for their conference championships meets, the Tom Tellez Invitational will feature collegiate teams from Rice and Texas Lutheran as well as the host team Houston and a handful of professional teams as well.
Friday's meet kicks off at 1 p.m., with the women's hammer throw, and the men's javelin. Field events will run through the women's pole vault and the men's discus at 7 p.m.
Running events will be held under the lights at Carl Lewis Complex and the gun will sound on the first event, the 4x100-meter relay, at 5:45 p.m. Running events will be on a rolling schedule, ending with the 4x400-meter relay tentatively scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
WHO TO WATCH
While the majority of athletes will be resting up to prepare for the conference championships next weekend, a few of Houston's top athletes will still be in competition.
Cameron Burrell enters the 100-meter dash competition ranked No. 29 in the nation after turning in a season best time of 10.33 at the Texas Relays in April. On the women's side in the 100, Bria Carter's best time this season of 11.58 ranks her No. 90 in the NCAA.
Houston will see a pair of ranked athletes compete in the men's 200-meter dash on Friday, when LeShon Collins looks to better his season best time of 20.77 that garners the No. 34 ranking in the NCAA, while Gerald Mills will also be in competition with the No. 95 ranking at 21.08.

NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men's signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
