EUGENE, Ore â€" University of Houston freshman Leonie Harm completed play at the NCAA Championships on Sunday evening at Eugene Country Club, tying for 81st in the nation's most prestigious collegiate event.
Harm, who was the Cougars' first representative at the NCAA Championships, overcame a tough front nine to post a 77 in Sunday's Third Round and tied for 81st with a 54-hole score of 224.
Starting her day on No. 1 on the 6,331-yard, par-72 course, the Gerlingen, Germany native suffered bogeys on six of her first 10 holes. Fortunately, Harm rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12-13 and added another birdie on the 152-yard, par-3 16th hole before capping her stay with consecutive pars.
No. 2 USC maintained its lead in the team standings at 860 to finish two strokes ahead of No. 3 UCLA and No. 5 Duke. They were joined among the top-15 leaders by No. 13 Washington (866), No. 12 Stanford (868), No. 20 Oregon (870), No. 18 South Carolina (872), No. 15 Virginia (873), No. 10 Arizona (873) No. 7 Northwestern (876), No. 8 Oklahoma State (876), No. 11 Arkansas (881), No. 38 North Carolina (881), No. 1 Alabama (882) and No. 16 Florida State (883) and advanced to Monday's Final Round of stroke play.
Duke's Virginia Elena Carta posted a 66 in Sunday's round to move into the individual lead at 13-under-par 203 after posting rounds in the 60s for the third straight day.
Monday's Final Round of stroke play will determine the 72-hole NCAA individual national champion and determine the top-eight teams advancing to match-play competition for the NCAA team national championship.
Competing in only its second season of team competition, Houston missed qualifying as a team for the NCAA Championships by only two strokes at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. Under Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell's leadership, the program was added to the Houston Department of Athletics for the 2013-14 season and only began competing for team championships in 2014-15 per NCAA rules.
Despite the program's brief history, the Cougars have established themselves as one of the nation's best. Houston has qualified to compete at an NCAA Regional in every season in which it was eligible and ranks at No. 28 nationally in the latest Golfstat poll.
