Cougars to Compete Across the Country

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field team will split up in three different ways as they head to a trio of meets this weekend in Houston, Albuquerque, N.M. and Seattle, Wash.
Some of the Cougars will remain home this weekend as Houston will host the Howie Ryan Invitational on Friday, Feb. 12, while the remainder of the Cougars will head to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13, while members of the distance team will travel to Seattle, Wash., to compete in the Husky Classic on the same days.
Action at the Howie Ryan Invitational is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with the women's weight throw and the women's long jump. The men's version of those events will follow immediately after the conclusion of the women. Running events kick off with the women's 60-meter hurdles at 1 p.m. and will roll through the men's 4x400-meter relay which is scheduled to end the meet at 6:35 p.m.
The first day of action in Albuquerque, N.M., is scheduled to begin with the men's pole vault and women's weight throw at 5 p.m. Running events will also begin at 5 p.m., with the first round of the men's and women's 60-meter hurdles.
Action at the Don Kirby meet resumes Saturday morning with the women's shot put at 10:30 a.m. The hurdles will then have their semifinals at 11:45 a.m., witch the meet scheduled to wrap up at 3:55 p.m., with the women's 4x400-meter relay.
The distance team begins competition on Friday at the Husky classic with the women's distance medley relay at 6:40 p.m. The men will follow the women' which will then be followed by the women's and men's 5,000m at 7:25 and 7:45 p.m. Day two's distance action will see the men's and women's 3000-meter run at 2:50 and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men's signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
This weekend marks the final tune ups for the Cougars who will take a week off before competing in the 2016 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. The American Conference meet will be held Sunday, Feb. 28 and Monday, Feb 29 in Birmingham, Ala.
