Houston Athletes Experience the Real World

Enterprise, Koala Health and Wellness, and Expeditors were among the five companies that were invited to speak to over 60 junior and senior UH athletes from various sports. After the companies were introduced, they formed into small groups where student-athletes were able to listen to and ask any questions they had about their future career field.
Senior swimmer Holly Criscuolo found the career event to be serviceable to her.
"It's really helpful, especially since we're so busy with practice and school, it's really hard for us to get out and look for jobs and learn these extra skills," Criscuolo said. "So it's nice to get the extra help, especially for a senior about to graduate."
The athletes were asked to come dressed in business casual and were asked to bring their resumes for any of the companies they were meeting with. The companies that were a part of the event were happy to help these athletes with jump-starting their careers.
"It gives them an entry level to where they can meet people that are in real life situations that they think they want to be in," said Dr. Ed Kieke of Koala Health and Wellness. "It allows them to develop that direct communication with someone in the field that they're interested in."
The Real World 101 series was started four years ago to help Houston student-athletes prepare and transition successfully from college athletics to a career in the real-world. With programs such as financial literacy, branding and social media awareness, interview workshops and post-athletic identity transition, student-athletes are able to craft and hone skills they will use following their collegiate careers.
