Houston to face San Diego State in Las Vegas Bowl

HOUSTON - Looking to become the first team in program history to win a bowl game in three consecutive seasons, Houston will take on Mountain West champion San Diego State in the Las Vegas Bowl presented by GEICO on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 2:30 p.m. CT at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
The game features the No. 3 rushing defense, with Houston allowing an average of only 97.9 rushing yards per game, against the nation's No. 2 rusher in the Aztecs' Donnel Pumphrey who is averaging 155.2 rushing yards per game and is No. 2 on the NCAA career rushing yards chart with 6,290 yards.

Tickets in the Houston seating area of the Sam Boyd Stadium are on sale now via the Houston Athletics Ticket Office for $81.75 each. Orders placed prior to Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m. CT will be allocated via Cougar Pride giving level, then Cougar Pride Priority Points. After Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. CT orders will be filled and allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, based on availability.

The bowl marks Houston's 10th bowl appearance in the last 12 seasons and its fourth straight bowl appearance, a streak that can only be matched by three other senior classes in Houston history. The 2016 senior class enters the game holding a Houston program record 38 wins and would become the first with three bowl wins, and the first with back-to-back double-digit wins with a win over the Aztecs.
Entering bowl season, Houston ranks fourth nationally behind just Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State with 22 wins over the past two years.
The Las Vegas Bowl will mark the third meeting between Houston and San Diego State with the Cougars claiming the two previous showdowns with the Aztecs in 1972 (49-14) and 1973 (14-9).
The matchup is Houston's 25th bowl appearance in coincidentally the 25th anniversary of the Las Vegas Bowl. The Cougars are 11-12-1 in their previous 24 bowl appearances.
Houston enters the Las Vegas Bowl with a record of 9-3 including a mark of 5-3 in The American Athletic Conference. San Diego State enters the game with a 10-3 record and a 6-2 mark in the Mountain West following a 27-24 win over Wyoming in the MWC Championship Saturday night in Laramie, Wyo.
