SOUTHLAKE, Texas - The University of Houston Swimming & Diving Team competed in their first dual meet action Friday night and produced five event champions, including sweeping the 200-yard breaststroke. The Cougars fell to the Mustangs, 170-128 at Caroll ISD Natatorium.
"We came up short in a lot of areas tonight," Swimming and Diving Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka said. "It's certainly disappointing when you lose and we have to find a way to channel that disappointment into motivation against a tough opponent tomorrow. We saw some great things from our breaststrokers and distance freestylers today, and the divers continue to execute at a high level."
Despite the loss, Houston produced five event victories, from Micaela Bouter (1-meter), Zarena Brown (1000-yard freestyle), Lauren Burrell (3-meter) and Ashley Grijalva (100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke).
Houston's first win of the meet came from freshman Brown in the 1000-yard freestyle. The Arvada, Colo., native, touched the wall at 10:20.05 to top the competition earning her first collegiate win.
Junior Grijalva swept the breaststroke events, capturing first in the 100-and 200-yard breaststroke. The Gilbert, Ariz., native, notched her first win after touching the wall at 1:04.61 in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the same event, freshman Peyton Kondis placed second netting a time of 1:05.23. With Grijalva's win in the 200-yard breaststroke, the Cougars swept the podium with Victoria Roubique and Kondis finishing second and third, respectively.
On the boards, Houston won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. In the 1-meter, Bouter scored 301.42 points to capture first overall while freshman Burrell netted second with 271.05 points. In the 3-meter dive, Burrell won her first collegiate event with a score of 305.55 with Bouter in second with 300.68 points. Both divers scores in the 1-and 3-meter are NCAA diving standard scores.
