HOUSTON -- Three Houston Cougar men's track and field athletes have been honored with USTFCCCA Individual All-Academic laurels after showing excellence in competition as well as in the classroom.
Senior Drevan Anderson-Kaapa, sophomore Brian Barraza and freshman Felipe Valencia each earned spots on the USTFCCCA All-Academic team by having at least a 3.25 GPA in their studies while competing in NCAA Championship postseason competition or finishing in the top-96 in the nation during the indoor season.
Anderson-Kaapa graduated with a degree in Supply Chain Management and Logistics while qualifying for the NCAA West Regional in the 800m. The Killeen, Texas, native held the 45th best time in the nation at 1:49.92, entering the regional.
Barraza, a Kinesiology major, qualified for the NCAA West Regional in the 5000m after clocking the 46th fastest 5K in the west division at 13:56.76. Barraza broke the 5000m school record with his top time, giving him three school records in the distance (including the indoor 3000m and 5000m).
Freshman Felipe Valencia burst onto the scene for the throwers after tossing the shot put 18.05m in his first competition at the NCAA Division I level during the indoor season. Valencia, a Kinesiology major, would continue to impress during the outdoor season, throwing the shot 16.57m at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships to help the Cougars score points.
In all, 529 athletes from 165 different institutions were honored with the award.
