Cameron Burrell Sixth at USATF Nationals

Eugene, Ore. â€" Sophomore jumper and sprinter Cameron Burrell finished in sixth place, competing among the nation's top athletes, in the long jump at the USATF Outdoor National Championships on Thursday, in Eugene, Ore.
Burrell opened the competition with a leap of 8.10m (26'-7.0") to put him in the lead among jumpers in flight one for good. Burrell would improve to 8.17m (26'-9.75") with his third and final jump of the preliminary rounds, placing him fourth among all competitors heading into the finals.
Following the preliminary rounds, Burrell found himself ahead of some of the top long jumpers in the United States, including Olympian and current Buffalo Bill, Marquise Goodwin and 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championship runner up in the event Jarrion Lawson (Arkansas).
After a pair of fouls to open the finals Burrell sat fifth through the fourth round of jumps, but was unable to improve on his previous best of 8.17m, ending the competition in sixth place.
Burrell qualified for the USATF Outdoor Championships after posting the 13th best mark among accepted participants with a season best leap of 7.82m.
The Houston, Texas native, and son of current Houston track and field head coach and Olympian Leroy Burrell, was competing unattached after redshirting for the 2015 outdoor season, but posted the fifth best long jump in the American Athletic Conference (7.30m) before an injury ended his indoor season.
Burrell is one of six Cougars from the past, present and future competing at the USATF Outdoor Championships this weekend. Cougar alum Chris Carter will compete in the senior division of the triple jump, while freshman Tony Burks (triple jump) as well as 2015 Houston track and field signees Amere Lattin (110m hurdles), John Lewis (100m dash) and Gerald Mills (200m dash) will all compete in the 2015 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships.
