HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field teams will travel to compete at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas on Saturday, May 2 in what will be the team's final tune up before the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
Action in Austin is scheduled to begin at noon CT with the women's hammer throw, and the field events will continue throughout the day concluding with the men's and women's shot put to be held at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The women's 4x100m relay is scheduled to kick off the running events for the evening and will start at 4 p.m. CT. Running events will be on a running schedule throughout the remainder of the evening culminating in the women's and men's 4x400m relays, which will be held at 8 p.m. CT.
The Cougars are fresh off an impressive showing at the 121st Penn Relays, which saw Houston student-athletes qualify for six events on the day of the finals, with the 4x200m relay team earning bronze in the prestigious championship final of the event. The team's mark of 1:23.50 was the top American college time in the race and currently sits as the fifth best time in the NCAA this season.
Sophomore distance runner Brian Barraza was named American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for his performance in the 1500m run last weekend, as a group of the Cougars split from the team and competed at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational hosted by Rice University. Barraza clocked a 3:44.95 in the race to set the second fastest time in school history behind Patrick Picciano's 3:44.48 set in 1988.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will have a week off to prepare for the American Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held May 14-17 in Storrs, Conn. The Cougar men will look to defend their title after winning the inaugural 2014 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, while the women will look to build on their fourth place finish from last season.
