Little Coogs Program Continues to Provide to Houston

HOUSTON - Now in its 13th year of existence, The Little Coogs program founded by Houston Football lettermen Jaron Barganier and James Hong continues to provide at-risk and underprivileged youth from Houston and the surrounding areas with exposure to a college atmosphere, including Houston Athletics events.
The Little Coogs Program began in 2002, in partnership with the University of Houston, after Barganier and Hong created Be A Champion, Inc., in 2001 as a way of reaching out to under-privileged youth in the Houston area through sports, education and through motivational speaking.
Since then, the Little Coogs program has allowed 64,750 at-risk youth to attend Houston Athletics events with more than 50,000 attending summer camps. The program has also benefitted after-school programs with more than 775,000 youth served in the program and more than 1.4 million meals served to school-age youth.
"We are excited to continue our partnership with the Little Coogs program. It is always a benefit when you are working with former student-athletes who understand the importance of community outreach and support," said Houston Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations Jeramiah Dickey. "More importantly, the direct impact the program has on our youth is instrumental to our future in Houston.
"Our goal is to continue to expand funding within the Houston Cougar community. The program is unique on a national level and we look forward to growing the partnership."
The program caters to past, present and future Cougars. As an outreach program, it organizes events and programs to youth, providing exposure to a college campus and game-day experience.
The program is supported by generous sponsors and alumni from the University of Houston and corporate partners, allowing thousands of kids to attend UH sporting events each year.
Through the program, Little Coogs offer campus facility tours, academic incentive programs, drug awareness, motivational speaking, hospital visits, food drives and youth tailgating parties.
