Houston Wraps Up Day One of The American Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. - After the first day of the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships the Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field teams qualified 15 athletes for the finals on day two of the American Athletic Championships in New York, N.Y., on Friday.
Through five events including the 5,000m run, distance medley relay, weight throw, pole vault and long jump, the men's team currently sits in fifth place with 18 points, while the women's team sits in 10th with seven points. The majority of the meet's scoring will take place with the finals of the running events held on Saturday.
The men's team picked up individual first place finishes in the preliminaries from juniors LeShon Collins in the 60m and 200m dashes and Issac Williams in the 60m hurdles. Williams qualified for the finals in three separate events on Saturday (60m hurdles, 60m dash, 200m dash).
On the women's side senior Sade Mariah Greenidge took second place in the preliminaries of the 60m hurdles while freshman Bria Carter qualified third in the 60m dash. Greenidge will look to repeat as American Athletic Conference champion in the 60m hurdles in the finals on Saturday.
Sophomore Damon Thompson put Houston in the point column with a fourth place finish in the weight throw tossing 18.25m. The men also got points from the Distance Medley Relay team for a fifth place finish in 10:08.69, and from three separate long jumpers, David Brown (4th, 7.25m), John Horton (6th, 7.12m) and Mar Clerveaux (8th, 7.00m).
The women's team scored first in the Distance Medley Relay when they clocked an eighth place finish in 12:18.80. The Cougar women also scored when seniors Justine Price threw 17.61m in the weight throw to finish sixth and Brittany Kinney jumped 5.79m to finish sixth in the long jump.

Houston returns to action for day two of The American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the New Balance Track Center at the Armory in New York, N.Y. Action begins at 9 a.m., with the resumption of the men's heptathlon.

Fans wishing to attend the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships can purchase tickets via the New Balance Track and Field Center in the Armory. Tickets start at $10 for students and are $12 dollars for general admission and $20 for reserved seating.
