HOUSTON - After three months and nine meets, the 2014-15 indoor track and field season will begin to wind down with the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28 at the New Balance Track and Field Center in The Armory, in New York, N.Y.
Action at the American Championships begins with the multis and the women's pentathlon 60m hurdles at 8 a.m., on Friday. Individual events begin with the men's pole vault trials and final at 9 a.m., while running events begin with the trials of the women's mile at 11:15 a.m. The day will close with the finals of the men's and women's 5000m runs and the Distance Medley Relays.
Houston will look to score big in the weight throw on day one as junior Damon Thompson currently has the second best mark in the conference (62'-8") on the men's side, while senior Justine Price sits fourth on the women's side (60'-0.5").
Competition in the long jump pit could prove to be vital for Houston on day one as the Cougars currently have three student-athletes in the top-8 of the competition. Trumaine Jefferson (25'-0"; First), Cameron Burrell (23'-11.5"; Fourth), and John Horton (23'-3.5"; Eighth) all currently sit in scoring position while Marc Clerveaux and Antwan Dickerson sit just outside in ninth and 10th respectively.
Saturday's section of the championships kicks off again with the multis and the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles at 8 a.m. Field events on Saturday are scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m., with the men's and women's high jump and running events begin at 11:10 a.m., with the women's mile finals.
The Cougars return four of last season's inaugural American Athletic Conference indoor champions to this year's meet, including LeShon Collins, who won both the 60m and 200m dash last season. 2014 women's 60m hurdle champion Sade-Mariah Greenidge and men's 800m champion Drevan Anderson-Kaapa will also return to defend their titles.
Sophomore thrower Cameron Cornelius returns to the shot put ring as Houston's lone field champion from the inaugural championships in 2014. Cornelius, Jefferson, hurdler Issac Williams and multi-event competitor Christopher Morales all currently hold the top-times in their respective events in the conference.
