Houston to Compete at UIW Christmas Invitational

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming team will head to San Antonio, Texas, to the Christmas Invitational hosted by the University of the Incarnate Word for a three-day meet running Friday, Dec. 18-20. The Cougars will compete against Rice, Incarnate Word, North Texas and Missouri at The Aquatic Center at Palo Alto College.
The three-day meet begins each morning at 10 a.m. with preliminary sessions. Following a break, the teams will head back into the pool for finals beginning at 5 p.m. except for Sunday finals, which will begin at 4 p.m.
The invitational is a dual gender meet, featuring 21 women’s events. The Cougar divers will not be competing this weekend. The Houston swim team will compete in 13 individual races and five relays. The meet offers the Cougars a preview of the conference championship format with multiple teams and a championship style-scoring format.

ORDER OF EVENTS
Friday: 1-meter diving, 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle 400-yard medley relay
Saturday-2-meter diving, 200-yard relay,400-yard I.M., 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 800-yard frestyle relay
Sunday - Platform diving, 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 400-yard freestyle relay
Two Cougars last competed at the illustrious AT&T Winter Nationals in Federal Way, Wash. December 4 & 5. Freshman Delia Weber placed in the top-25 in the 800-meter freestyle with an overall time of 9:08.82. Sophomore Ashley Grijalva competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke, finishing 54th in a time of 1:13.00 and 64th in a time of 2:44.13, respectively.
The last time the Cougars competed as a team, the swimmers shined, breaking five program records at the Phill Hansel Invitational. Led by Grijalva, Weber and Eleanna Koutsouveli, the Cougars finished fourth overall at the ten-team invite honoring Houston’s former head coach.
UP NEXT
The Cougar will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to kick off the 2016 season for the Arkansas Quad Meet Jan 22 & 23 to compete against Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Clemson.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the first time as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 17-20, 2016. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19, 2016 in Atlanta.
