HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar Track and Field program and Head Coach Leroy Burrell have released the squad's 2015-16 competition schedule, which includes five meets hosted on their home track as well as eight more inside the Lone Star State, the team announced Tuesday.
Houston begins the indoor season with the Reveille Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, on Dec. 12, 2015 in College Station, Texas. After the opener, the Cougars take a month off to train before picking competition up in the new-year with the first of three home indoor meets, the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational, on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.
Coach Burrell's squad heads out of state for the first time in 2016 when they travel to Lexington, Ky., Jan. 23-24 for the Rod McCravy Memorial hosted by the University of Kentucky. Following the meet in The Bluegrass State, the Cougars return home for their second meet at Yeoman Fieldhouse, the Houston Invitational, on Jan. 29-30.
Houston makes a return trip to College Station for its second of two meets at Texas A&M when they compete in the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Feb. 5-6. The Cougars will then split up three ways for the final weekend before conference, with some of the team heading to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., and others heading to the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 12-13. The remainder will stay home for the Howie Ryan Invitational Feb. 12.
The indoor postseason begins with the 2016 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 28-29, in Birmingham, Ala. The Houston men will look to defend their 2015 American Indoor Championship, while the women will build on last season's seventh place finish.
The 2016 Indoor season concludes with the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
Houston opens the 2016 outdoor portion of its schedule on the road for the entire month of March. The Cougars head to San Antonio to compete in the UTSA Invitational March 18 before traveling across town to Rice to take part in the Victor Lopez Classic from March 24-26.
The squads will split the following week, as some athletes will head to the prestigious Texas Relays from March 30-April 2 in Austin, Texas, while the remainder of the student-athletes will take part in the Bobcat Invitational, hosted by Texas State, in San Marcos, Texas.
The Cougars will then make a trip to Waco, Texas to compete in the Baylor Invitational April 9. They split up once more on April 16, with some athletes returning to Austin for the Texas Invitational, while others will return to Rice for the J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
The Cougars return home for their first meet at Tom Tellez Track at the Carl Lewis International Complex since May 3, 2008, when they host the Houston Invitational April 23. Houston announced plans to renovate the complex thanks to a generous $1.5 million donation from Carolyn and Ron Yokubaitis that will completely refurbish the complex, including a resurfacing of the Tom Tellez Track along with additional improvements.
From there, the Cougars head to historic Franklin Field to compete in the 2016 Penn Relays on April 28-30. This year's installment of the Relays will be the 122nd year of running at the Penn Relays, with this season presenting a new running surface on the track at Franklin Field.
The Cougars return home May 6 to host their second outdoor meet of the 2016 campaign, the Tom Tellez Invitational, which will serve as the final tune up for the American Championships.
Houston kicks off outdoor postseason competition with the 2016 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships from May 12-15 in Orlando, Fla. The Houston men claimed the inaugural American title in 2014 before finishing third at last year's Outdoor Championship meet.
Postseason continues from May 26-28 in Lawrence, Kan., at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, with athletes competing for a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
Houston is also expected to have athletes compete at the USATF Olympic Trials in Eugene from July 1-10, with athletes moving on from there to compete in the XXIX Olympic Games from Aug. 12-20, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
