HOUSTON - Sophomore Cross Country student-athlete Brian Barraza was named the American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Barraza turned in the top time for an athlete attached to a University at this past weekend's Rice Invitational. The El Paso native finished with a time of 16:57 in the 6K race which placed him second among the athletes competing, however the athlete finishing first was running unattached and not affiliated with a collegiate team.
Barraza picked up where he left off in his freshman season, in which he tallied four top-five finishes including a win at the Baylor Twilight Invitational on Aug. 30, 2013, his first collegiate competition. His performance last season earned him athlete of the week on Sept. 3, 2013 and eventually he earned a spot on the 2013 All-American Athletic Conference team.
Barraza also earned the chance to compete for his country last summer when he ran for Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships in the 5,000 meter run in Eugene, Ore. Barraza finished second in the same event at the USATF Junior Championships to qualify for Worlds.
