GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Houston swimmers Mackenzie Alspaugh, Ashley Grijalva and Maya Owens swam outstanding races on the final day of competition at the prominent USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Grijalva swam in the 200-yard breaststroke and placed 64th overall, with a time of 2:20.04. She swam the first 50 yards in 32.15, her second leg in 35.29, the third in 36.56 and the last 50 yards in 37.05.
In the 200-yard butterfly, junior Owens finished 63rd in a time of 2:05.35 followed by senior Alspaugh in 64th with a time of 2:05.67. Both swimmers went out incredibly fast, with Owens recording a time of 28.17 on the first leg and Alspaugh starting in 28.27.
"We had a number of solid, well-swam races that we can build on for the end of the season," said Head Coach Rich Murphy. "Competing in this environment presents its own set of challenges and variables that the athletes managed well. I look forward to their continued progress this season."
