Cross To Compete In 2014 South Central Regionals

HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the South Central Regional Championships beginning at noon, on Friday, Nov. 14.The women will begin a 6K at noon while the men will follow with a 10K an hour later at 1 p.m. The Houston men and women finished 11th and 16th respectively at the 2013 Regionals. The competition will take place at Agri Park, located in Razorback Meadow.
The Cougar men are fresh off a third place overall finish at the American Athletic Conference Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Sophomore Brian Barraza continued to pace the Cougars finishing just 10 seconds off the lead in fourth place with a time of 24:53 in the 8K race. Houston also landed top-15 finishes from freshman Blake Contreras (11th, 25:30) and junior James Broussard (15th, 25:50).
Barraza, Contreras and Broussard all ran fast enough times to earn All-American Athletic Conference Team honors.
The Cougar women improved four spots from the 2013 American Championships and climbed to sixth in this season's race. Freshman Ebony White led all Houston runners with her 16th place 21:43 in the 6K. Selena Sierra also posted a top-25 time finishing in 21st at 21:57.

UP NEXTThe top two teams finishing in each regional will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23. The remaining 13 teams from each regional will be selected one-by-one, based on their head-to-head performances against the teams already in the NCAA Championships field, for an at-large berth. The final NCAA Championship field will consist of 31 teams from across the country.
The top four individuals from each regional that were not on an NCAA Championship qualifying team will also be selected to compete in the Championships.
2013 SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL RESULTS
The Cougar men distance runners finished in 11th place at the 2013 South Central Regional. Yonas Tesfai paced the Cougars with a time of 30:54.4 (18th). On the women's side Selena Sierra helped lead the Cougars to a 15th place finish with her time of 21:56.4 (43rd).
