HOUSTON - The University of Houston Swimming and Diving team defeated Incarnate Word 166-120 in dual meet action on Saturday in San Antonio. The Cougars were able to get nine individual wins in the meet; picking up first place finishes in seven separate swimming events and each of the two diving events.
"We did a great job capitalizing on two wins apiece by Heather Winn, Maya Owens, and Danielle Shedd," said head coach Rich Murphy.
With the victory against Incarnate Word the Cougars improved to 4-3 on the year in dual meet action.
"I was pleased with the depth that we were able to field in most events with it being our third road trip in ten days. It was a good win for us at this point in the season. I appreciate the fight and persistence our team has shown managing the toughest stretch of our training and competition schedule which concludes with today's win."
Winn started the winning ways for UH by earning a victory during the third event of the day in 1,000 free (10:33.13). The senior from Slidell, La. also placed first in the 500 free (5:10.86) leading a trio of UH racers that went 1-2-3 (Makenzie Alspaugh and Rachel Hobbins) in the event.
Owens took first for Houston in the 200 free (1:56) during the following event and added a first-place finish in the 100 fly (58.79) later in the afternoon.
The Cougars were able to sweep the top spots in both diving events. Sophomore Danielle Shedd took first place in each facet of the diving competition with scores of 277.88 (1M) and 295.35 (3M) on the day. Freshman Taylor Olanski also put up great numbers on the diving boards with two second place finishes of her own.
"I'd like to thank Yulia Pakhalina for her efforts as interim diving coach and I congratulate her on a first and second place finish on both boards today."
Two Taylors, Taylor Gregory and Taylor Derevyanik, claimed both the 100 and 200 back titles. In both races freshmen Jasmine Williams showed strong taking second.
Mackenzie Alspaugh added the final individual win for the Red and White placing first in the 200 fly (2:07.16).
