GREENVILLE, S.C. - Junior Courtney Ferguson opened the Lady Paladin Invitational with a 76 to lead the University of Houston Women's Golf team on Friday morning.
Ferguson was the leading competitor in the Cougars' three-woman lineup. The Houston native and transfer from Oklahoma State overcame a slow start that saw her post four bogeys through her first seven holes.
However, the Clear Lake High product rebounded on her back nine, posting only one bogey and a birdie on the 364-yard, par-4 fifth hole.
Sophomore Raegan Bremer was tied for 77th after an opening-round 77, while freshman Emily Gilbreth was tied for 68th at 79 on the 6,266-yard, par-72 course at Furman University Golf Club.
"We had a good game plan going in, but we got ahead of ourselves in trying to take more than the course was giving us, " head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We never had control of the speed on the greens and had some unforced errors. The course just got the best of us, but we had some good practice following the round. Saturday will be a new day."
The Lady Paladin Invitational resumes with the second round Saturday morning, although Furman officials announced a change to the tournament's previously announced schedule. Due to the threat of inclement weather in the area, Saturday's round will begin with an 8 a.m. (CST) shotgun start.
Ferguson will tee off the second group on No. 16, while Bremer will start off No. 17. Gilbreth will tee off in the first group off No. 18 in the Second Round.
The event wraps up with the final 18 holes teeing off at 8 a.m. (CT), Sunday. Fans can follow Lady Paladin Invitational live scoring by visiting GolfStat.com and clicking the appropriate links or by clicking here.
On the team side, GRU Augusta - formerly Augusta State - posted a score of 3-under-par 285 to stand atop the leaderboard. Clemson finished the first day in second at 287, while Furman (290), Wisconsin (290) and Florida State (294) rounded out the top-five leaders.
Individually, Ashlan Ramey (Clemson) and Eunice Yi (GRU Augusta) held the first-round lead after shooting 4-under-par 68s. Casey Kennedy (GRU Augusta) and Sloan Shanahan (Clemson) were tied for third at 69, while UNC Wilmington's stood in fifth with a 69.

Following the Lady Paladin Invitational, the Cougars wrap up their fall season when they compete at the Schooner Fall Classic, hosted by Oklahoma at Belmar Golf Club.
The tournament will be a homecoming for Chadwell, who served as an assistant coach with the Sooners from 2010-13 and helped lead Oklahoma to three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCAA Championships berths.
