THE LINEUP
Earlier this week, sophomore Raegan Bremer and junior Courtney Ferguson represented the Cougars at Louisville's Cardinal Cup with a pair of top-20 finishes. Despite the travel and competition in two different states, head coach Gerrod Chadwell said the Cougars are handling it well.
"Fatigue is not a concern. We have a lot off good things going on right now, so it's great to carry that over from event to event," Chadwell said. "Everyone has their legs under them, and that's good because this course is playing longer than our first two events. We just need to keep working on our positives."
Bremer, a native of Anaheim, Calif., fired a 2-under-par 70 during the final round to shoot into a tie for sixth place with a score of 218. Although it's only two tournaments in, Bremer now holds Houston Women's Golf records for low round, low tournament and best finish.
Bremer now leads the Cougars with a 73.83 scoring average and two rounds of par or better this season.
Ferguson opened the Cardinal Cup with a 1-under-par 71 - which was the Houston record until Bremer's final-round performance - and finished that event in a tie for 19th at 226.
The Cougars will be at full strength when they compete this weekend as freshman Emily Gilbreth returns to the lineup.
Gilbreth made her collegiate debut at Texas A&M's "Mo"Morial Invitational on Sept. 9-11. After struggling during the first round of her career, the Bellaire High product rebounded nicely with back-to-back 74s and eagled her final hole at that tournament, a first in school history.
"It's always good to get as many kids as much playing time as you can to evaluate them, their game and their progress," Chadwell "It's always nice to have everyone out there and competing."
All three are scheduled to tee off No. 10 on Friday morning, starting with Ferguson at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) and continuing with Bremer (9:39 a.m. CDT) and Gilbreth (9:48 a.m. CDT)
THE FIELD
With only three players in their lineup, the Cougars will compete as individuals and not be eligible for the team title. Houston will compete against student-athletes from Clemson, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida State, GRU Augusta, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, Nova Southeastern, Samford, Southern Miss, Texas A&M, UNC Wilmington, UNC Greensboro, Wisconsin, Wofford and host Furman.
UP NEXT
Following the Lady Paladin Invitational, the Cougars wrap up their fall season when they compete at the Schooner Fall Classic, hosted by Oklahoma at Belmar Golf Club.
The tournament will be a homecoming for Chadwell, who served as an assistant coach with the Sooners from 2010-13 and helped lead Oklahoma to three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCAA Championships berths.
