BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Posting a team score of 293, the University of Houston golf team fell to second place at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate presented by Graeme McDowell on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the program's second straight top-three team finish to open the fall season. Houston finished third at the season-opening The Invitational at Kiawah on Sept. 9-11. It also marked the program's 13th top-five team finish during head coach Jonathan Dismuke's tenure.
Leading by five entering the final round, the Cougars struggled at times on the back nine, posting only one birdie as a team during the final nine holes.
"Shoal Creek is a PGA Championship course, and the pin placements and greens were challenging," assistant coach Chris Hill said. "We had an emphasis on putting the ball in the fairway, but we struggled to do that."
Four Cougars finished among the top-20 individual leaders. For the second straight day and third straight round, junior Wesley McClain led the Cougars. The Diboll, Texas, native shot a 1-over-par 73 on the 7,234-yard course at Shoal Creek Country Club and finished fourth overall at 3-under-par 213.
It was the best finish of McClain's career, topping his tie for seventh at the Lone Star Invitational on Oct. 17, 2010.
"I was proud of Wes with a top-five finish," Hill said. "He put the team on his back down the stretch and put himself in contention."
Junior Jesse Droemer and sophomore Roman Robledo tied for 11th at 217, while junior Curtis Reed tied for 19th at 222. Freshman Andrew Ertel, who was making his collegiate debut, finished 57th at 239.
LSU won the team championship at 864 after shooting an even-par 288 in the final round as a team. Rodolfo Cazaubon of North Texas and LSU teammates Stewart Jolly and Curtis Thompson shared medalist honors at 6-under-par 210.
