Competing on the 7,344-yard, par-72 Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, everyone struggled in the final round with no player shooting lower than 74 and no team shooting better than 16-over-par 304 on Tuesday. Although the Cougars final-round 315 was easily their highest mark in the three-day event, it tied as the eighth-best team score on the day.
Heavy winds gusting as much as 30 mph, and a course layout that put players teeing off directly into the wind or with winds blowing straight behind them made play a challenge for everyone.
"This is one of the hardest courses I have ever set foot on. With winds like that, no course plays easy, much less one like Kiawah Island," fourth-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "Playing downwind, it was hard to stop the ball around the greens. Playing against the wind, it was hard to get the ball to the hole.
"We didn't handle the conditions as well as we would have liked. We just have to chalk it up and regroup and have a good week of practice. We will be better for it."
Junior Curtis Reed, who held the first-round lead with a 71 on Sunday, led the Cougars at 229 to tie for 15th, while sophomore Roman Robledo tied for 18th with a score of 230.
Junior Jesse Droemer tied for 27th at 232, and sophomore Kyle Pilgrim finished 34th at 234. Senior Will Dusenbury tied for 44th at 237, and freshman Blair Hamilton - making his collegiate debut - tied for 48th at 238.
Florida won the team championship with a score of 882 to finish 24 strokes ahead of second-place UT Arlington. Following the Cougars, host College of Charleston (913), USF (917), UAB (922), Akron (925), Davidson (926), Texas State (926) and Stephen F. Austin (932) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes earned medalist honors with a score of 220, despite shooting a final-round 80. Florida dominated the individual leaderboard from there with Tyler McCumber, T.J. Vogel, A.J. Crouch and Santiago Gavino taking the next four spots.

This was the first of four tournaments in which the Cougars will compete as a team during the fall. The team will now take a two-week break from competition before playing at the Shoal Creek Invitational on Sept. 24-25 in Birmingham, Ala.
