HOUSTON - Crawford Jones threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns and Ryan Jackson added 129 yards and two scores on the ground to lead the University of Houston football team to a 40-17 victory over Tulane in the final home game at Robertson Stadium on Saturday.
The Cougars (5-7) wasted no time in getting on the board, as redshirt freshman running back Kenneth Farrow broke a 48-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and Jones found senior receiver Ronnie Williams for a 22-yard touchdown in a drive that lasted just 51 seconds.
On the ensuing Tulane possession, senior linebacker Phillip Steward snagged his third interception of the season at Houston's own 20-yard line, and the Cougars marched 80 yards on eight plays, capped by another touchdown strike to Williams on a nine-yard screen pass.
After the Cougar defense forced a three-and-out, Houston drove 56 yards that resulted in a 32-yard field goal from senior placekicker Matt Hogan.
Tulane would counter with a 10-yard throw and catch from Ryan Griffin to Xavier Rush to trim the deficit to 17-7, and the score would remain intact until Hogan struck again before the half with a 25-yard field goal as the Cougars held a 20-7 advantage at the break.
After Tulane added a field goal late in the third quarter, freshman running back Ryan Jackson rolled to the right and scampered 72 yards for a touchdown to push the Houston lead to 27-10.
The Green Wave would again cut the deficit to 10 on a 51-yard touchdown pass, but theCougars answered with a 45-yard drive that culminated in a 34-yard field goal from Hogan.
With under 11 minutes remaining in the contest, freshman safety Trevon Stewart tallied his first-career interception and returned the ball to Tulane's 24-yard line to set up another Hogan field goal.
The Cougars rounded out the scoring with 6:11 left to play when Jackson juked his way to the endzone on a nine-yard run.
Williams led the Houston receivers with a career-best 10 catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while Dewayne Peace hauled in seven receptions for 101 yards and Deontay Greenberry added three catches for 97 yards.
Thomas Bates led the defensive unit with a career-high 11 tackles, while Derrick Mathews also registered 11 stops on the day and Everett Daniels swatted five passes. Steward, freshman linebacker Eric Eiland and junior defensive lineman Zeke Riser all tallied sacks in the victory.
