SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Lowering its team score by three strokes, the University of Houston golf team moved into fifth place Monday following the second round of the Lone Star Invitational.
A day after posting a team score of 298, the Cougars finished their second round at 293 for a team score of 571 on the, 6,931-yard, par 72 course at Hill Country Resort Golf Club.
Junior Curtis Reed and sophomore Roman Robledo each posted subpar round Monday to move into the top-12 individual leaders entering Tuesday's final round. Reed posted the Cougars' best round of the day with a 2-under-par 70. The Castroville, Texas, native drained three birdies on his front nine and endured only one bogey on the back nine to move into 10th place at 145.
Sophomore Roman Robledo posted a pair of bogeys through his first five holes of the day but capped his front nine with an eagle on the 554-yard, par-5 ninth hole. The Harlingen, Texas, native finished the second round at 1-under-par 71 and was tied for 12th at 146.
"We played a much more steady round. Curtis Round went off early and got off to a great start, and Roman came in under par. Those two scores really helped us today," fourth-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "We put ourselves in better position off the tee and gave ourselves more opportunities to score. All in all, it was a pretty good day."
Junior Jesse Droemer was tied for 30th at 149, while junior Wesley McClain was tied for 40th at 151. Playing as an individual, freshman Vincent Martino was tied for 14th at 147.
The Cougars were hampered to start the day when sophomore Kyle Pilgrim was forced to sit out Monday's round due to illness. After a day of rest, he was expected to return to compete in Tuesday's final round.
No. 36 North Texas held the second-day lead with a score of 579 to finish ahead of Denver (582), Central Arkansas (585) and host UTSA (589). After the Cougars, Texas State (592), Sacramento State (594), Arizona (597), Southern Miss (598) and Rice (604) rounded out the top-10 team leaders
Individually, North Texas' Rodolfo Cazaubon was in first place at 138, four strokes better than Central Arkansas' Pep Angles. Denver's Jordan Burgess and Mitchell McLeroy of Stephen F. Austin were tied for third at 143 with five played tied at even par.
