- Senior kicker Matt Hogan set a Conference USA record with sixfield goals, and the University of Houston defense turned in a stifling effort as the Cougars rolled past UAB, 39-17 on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Stadium.
Houston notched its third straight victory to improve to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in C-USA play, while UAB fell to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in league action.
The Cougars' offensive attack rolled up 566 total yards and featured a 300-yard passer (David Piland), 100-yard rusher (Charles Sims) and 100-yard receiver(Shane Ros).
Piland connected on 32 of 44 passes for 364 yards and a touchdown, while Sims rushed for 133 yards on 26 carries, marking his third-straight performance of morethan 100 yards. Ros turned in another stellar performance with career highs of seven receptions for 114 yards and his first touchdown as a Cougar.
The Houston defense settled in late in the first quarter, allowing only a fieldgoal over a span of nearly 26 minutes while smothering the Blazers with eight sacks.
Despite outgaining UAB in total yards in the first half by a 328-190 margin, the Cougars led by only six points (16-10) at the break.
Piland marched the Cougars down the field on their opening drive, finding Ros for a 25-yard touchdown for the early 7-0 advantage.
TheBlazers quickly answered as Austin Brown connected on a 16-yard strike to Jay Davis to even the score.
The Cougar defense made its first crucial stop of the afternoon after Houston fumbled on its own 34-yard line, holding UAB on a fourth-down attempt.
Houston answered with Hogan field goals of 23 and 27 yards, and after senior linebacker Phillip Steward snagged an interception in Houston territory, Hogan added another field goal of 23 yards to push the Cougars to a 16-7 lead.
The Cougars took control of the contest quickly following the break, marching 75 yards on nine plays as sophomore running back Kenneth Farrow capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Houston's defense continued to provide vital stops, holding UAB on another fourth-down attempt to set up a field goal and later stopping another Blazer drive with a fumble in Cougar territory.
The offense responded to the turnover, driving 67 yards as freshman running back Ryan Jackson rumbled for 10 yards to put the Cougars up 33-10 late in the third quarter.
Hogan continued his record-breaking performance with a career-long 52-yard field goal with 1:44 remaining in the third quarter, and shattered the school and league record early in the fourth quarter with a 26-yarder to put Houston up 39-10.
Steward racked up double-digit tackles for the fifth time this season with 13 stops, while also posting three tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks, and an interception.
Senior cornerback D.J. Hayden tallied nine tackles, two pass breakups and a forcedfumble, while sophomore linebacker Derrick Mathews posted eight tackles, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups and four quarterback hurries.
The Cougars look to extend their winning streak to four games when they meet SMU at 7 p.m., Thursday, in Dallas.
