HOUSTON - University of Houston track and field sprinter Christie Jones, along with Houston pole-vaulter Karley King and pentathlon and heptathlon competitor Megan Frausto, have been recently named to the U.S Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Track & Field All-Academic Team.
Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest in individual events at the most recent NCAA Championships. Those who earn multiple individual championship titles rank higher in the tie-breaking process, and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker to establish a winner. Separate awards are given to track and field athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons, resulting in four categories.
In addition to her academic success, public relations major Christie Jones has excelled on the track earning five top-five finishes in the 60 meter dash, in addition to winning the 60m at the 2010 New Mexico Invite with a time of 7.44.
As a freshman Karley King received her first collegiate victory at the TSU Relays in the pole vault with 3.65m/11-11.75 vault. King also placed third at the outdoor C-USA Championships with a 3.62m/11-10.5 mark.
Fellow freshman Megan Frausto captured first place in the first pentathlon entered in her collegiate career at the Houston Invitational, positing a score of 3,533. She also earned second place at the C-USA Indoor Championships with a score of 3,676.
Jones, King and Frausto join teammate John Fortune, who was also recently named to the USTFCCCA Division I Track & Field All-Academic Team.
