Each season the school year kicks off with "Shasta Blast" an opening ceremonies of sorts for the more than 400 student-athletes at the University of Houston.
The 2011 event was held at the Athletics / Alumni Center on Sunday evening and began with an annual competition, this year's selection, a water balloon toss. With a four-way tie in affect, a playoff of "Rocks, Paper, Scissors" was implemented and soccer came out on top.
They keynote speaker for the evening's festivities was Houston-native Juan Diaz, a 27-year old retired lightweight boxer. Diaz' goal, in addition to winning world championship belts, which he did, was to earn a college degree. He did that as well as a graduate of UH-Downtown.
The final activity of the night is when the student-athletes get served dinner from their head coaches.
The first competition of the 2011 season takes place Monday night when the soccer team takes on Texas at Robertson Stadium at 7 p.m.
