HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team opened up Day 1 of the NCAA Championships with three personal bests including a school record being improved upon. The action took place in Des Moines, Iowa.
The women's 4x100m relay team placed third in the semifinals en route to improving upon their own school record. Tai'shea Reese, Whitney Harris, Kalyn Floyd and Grecia Bolton lowered their time to 43.38 from 43.54. They qualified for Saturday's finals (12:03 p.m. start time).
Harris, Floyd, and Bolton earned All-American honors last year by placing in fifth in the event.
Bolton also competed in the 100m semifinals and set a personal best mark with her 11.41 time. The junior sprinter will turn her individual attention to the 200m, which kicks off the running events on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Errol Nolan ran the seventh-fastest 400m and set a personal best at 45.30, lowering his own mark by 0.24 seconds.
Despite placing in the top eight, Nolan will not compete in the finals of the event. The finals take the top-two times from each heat, plus the next fastest two. Nolan placed fourth in his own heat, but he missed out on the wildcard-qualifying option against two other runners by 0.01 seconds. He topped both the two-fastest times in the third heat.
Alex Bentley placed 19th in the pole vault with his 5.15m/16-10.75 clearance. The senior opted to pass the 5.25m/17-2.75 height but was unable to clear the next notch as he went for a personal record in the event.
