EUGENE, Ore. - Alex Bentley, Chris Carter and Jonathan Williams punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships as the Cougars concluded day one of the NCAA preliminaries in Eugene, Ore.
The Cougars had to battle the elements as the rain and cold conditions slowed the competition in both times and delays.
Carter, who has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships twice in the triple jump (2009, 2010), earned his first trip to the meet in the long jump. Carter saved his best jump of the season with his 6th place finish (7.68m/25-2.5w).
Carter will also compete in the triple jump on Sunday.
Williams, the long jump runner-up at Conference USA Championships to Carter, earned his first bid to the NCAA Championships. The senior from Pearland, Texas, qualified in 12th place (7.46m/24-5.75w).
Senior Alex Bentley earned his first trip to the NCAA Championships with his 7th place finish in the pole vault (5.20m/17-0.75). It was the fourth time this year the Tomball, Texas native met or exceeded that mark.
Errol Nolan cruised to victory in his 400m heat (46.49) to qualify for Friday's quarterfinals. The sophomore from Rosenberg, Texas, is seeking his second appearance at the NCAA championships in the event.
Kalyn Floyd will represent the women's 400m side as she finished third in her heat (55.53) to automatically advance to Friday's quarterfinals.
Grecia Bolton jumped out of the blocks and never relinquished the lead in her 100m heat as she finished 5th overall (11.45*). Bolton lowered her personal best that she set at the C-USA Championships as she was the runner up in the event.
Joining Bolton in the 100m quarterfinals is Whitney Harris, who placed 11th (11.53w).
The All-American duo will look to repeat in the 4x100m on Sunday as well.
The quarterfinal of the 100m and 400m races will consist of three heats with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships. The top three in each quarterfinal heat plus the next three fastest times will qualify.
