HOUSTON - The University of Houston is sending 27 student-athletes to the NCAA West Regionals hosted by the University of Oregon at Hayward Field from Thursday through Saturday. The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships.
MEN
The Cougars have two qualifiers in the 400m in Errol Nolan and Kelvin Furlough. Nolan, the Conference USA 200m and 400m champion, is seeded No. 8 (45.54) and Furlough is No. 17 (46.29).
Those two will team up with Garrett Hughey and Tyron Carrier to form the No. 13 4x400m team (3:08.37).
Carrier will also compete in 200m (No. 43 - 21.24).
The jump crew of long and triple jumpers will be represented well for Houston at the Regional meet as five different jumpers will be in attendance. Indoor All-American Chris Carter holds the No. 6 seed in the triple jump (16.11m/52-10.25) and ranks No. 28 in the long jump (7.48m/24-6.5). Carter won both C-USA Outdoor titles.
Lamar Delaney also qualified for both horizontal jumps as he ranks No. 24 in the triple jump (15.52m/50-11) and No. 32 (7.44m/24-5) in the long jump.
C-USA pole vault champion Alex Bentley and runner-up Seth Arnold are ranked No. 15 (5.26m/17-3) and No. 44 (5.11m/16-9.25). Bentley's mark ranks as the fifth-best in program history.
WOMEN
Last year the 4x100m relay team set a school record en route to earning All-American status by finishing fifth in the nation. This year, Tai'shea Reese teamed up returning All-Americans Whitney Harris, Kalyn Floyd and Grecia Bolton to lower their time to 43.54 as they are No. 2 seed heading into the Western Regional.
Members of that relay will have their work cut out of for them as they will compete in a numbers of events.
Harris has qualified four events, tied with Reese for the most of any Cougar. The Seguin, Texas native will participant on both relay teams (4x100m, 4x400m) in addition to the 100m (No. 16 - 11.43) and the 200m (No. 18 - 23.44).
Reese is also a four-event qualifier as she will compete in the 100m (No. 35 - 11.63), 200m (No. 22 - 23.56) and the long jump (No. 21 - 6.17m/20-3).
Bolton is also set to compete in multiple events as she qualified for the 100m (No. 10 - 11.30) and 200m (No. 17 - 23.41). Floyd registered qualifying marks in the 400m (No. 19 - 53.26) and will run with the 4x400m relay team.
Brittany Wallace will run with Floyd in the 4x400m and the individual 400m dash as she ranks No. 31 (54.06) in the event.
Harris, Floyd and Wallace will team up with Ciera Johnson to form the 4x400m tandem, ranked No. 14 (3:37.37).
DeMeeka Jones is the top hurdler for the Cougars, as she ranks No. 3 in school history in the 100m event with her 13.25 time. She ranks No. 11 in the region.
