HOUSTON - Chris Carter and Alex Bentley captured conference titles to lead the Cougars men team to first place at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Rice University.
Carter (7.49m/24-6.5) led the Houston long jumpers as they claimed 25 points in the event. Jonathan Williams (7.44m/24-5) took second place as the top-two competitors for Houston missed out on personal bests by 0.01m.
It was the third Outdoor C-USA Championship for Carter, his first in the long jump. He is the two-time defending triple jump tomorrow and takes off to defend his crown at 4 p.m.
Junior Thomas Lang (7.35m/24-1.5) did improve upon his own best mark on his way to fourth place. Wesley Bray (7.29m/23-11) placed seventh to score points for Houston as well.
The pole vault saw the Cougars finish 1-2 in as well as Bentley (5.11m/16-9.25) teamed with freshman Seth Arnold to sweep the top spots. Michael Mahnke also registered points with his fifth place finish to give the Cougars 22 points in the event.
Bentley won the pole vault as a freshman in 2007.
A number of Cougars sprinters qualified for Sunday's finals and Errol Nolan led the way, taking the top seed with his wins in the 200m (20.85) and 400m (46.20).
Tyron Carrier advanced to championship Sunday in the 100m (10.74) and 200m (21.24), seeded fourth in both events.
Grecia Bolton and Whitney Harris both qualified for the 100m and 200m finals. Bolton is seeded third in both events (11.54, 23.41) and Harris finished in fourth and eighth (11.50*, 23.60). Tai'shea Reese (23.56) will join the duo in the 200m tomorrow for a crowded Cougar finals as she set a personal best in the event.
All four men's 110m hurdlers advanced to Sunday's Championships. Thomas Lang (14.50), Leon Bullock (14.54*), Emmanuel Osadebey (14.76) and Kevin Johnson (15.19) finished 2-3-6-8 in the preliminaries.
Kalyn Floyd (53.24) won her heat to advance to the 400m finals tomorrow. Brittany Wallace (54.52) also won her heat to qualifier for the finals as she closed the distance and overtook the leader in the final 10 meters. They are seeded 4 and 5.
Ciera Johnson (2:10.86) led from start to finish first n the 800m preliminaries.
Two steeplechasers earned points for the Cougars as Kathryn Ducommun set a personal best (10:45.89) to place fifth. Andres Santaolalla (9:41.02) took seventh for the men's side.
