C-USA Announces Commissioner's Medal Recipients

HOUSTON - Sixteen University of Houston student-athletes received Conference USA Commissioner's Medals, the league office announced Tuesday. Medals are given to those C-USA student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better.
Houston was represented in eight different sports for the 2010-11 academic year and earned the most recipients in the last four years.
Those receiving the medal included Matt Creel of baseball, Roxana Button of women's basketball, Fabiana Cirino and Samantha Sackos of soccer, Jennifer Klinkert of softball, Marissa Blumenthal, Reka Kovacs and Leah Sanchez of swimming, Celia Fraser of tennis, John Fortune of men's track and field, Megan Frausto of women's track and field and Ashley Applequist, Alex Edwards, Kacy Griffin, Stephanie Nwachukwu and Meredith Ware of volleyball.
Volleyball led the way with five student-athletes at or above the 3.75 GPA mark, including Stephanie Nwachukwu, who earned the honor for the second-straight year. The swimming and soccer squads also had multiple student-athletes earn the accolade.
Softball's Jennifer Klinkert highlighted the group, earning her fourth C-USA Commissioner's Medal, while women's basketball's Roxana Button reached the achievement for the third-straight year. Freshman tennis player Celia Fraser was the lone Cougar to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA.
On Tuesday, Houston had 140 student-athletes selected to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, which was a 20 percent increase from last season's 117 honorees.
