HOUSTON - Houston Football returned to the practice field on Tuesday, working out for nearly two hours in advance of the Jan. 2 TicketCity Bowl against Penn State. The Cougars worked on a number of different areas, including a "Good on Good" segment, which saw the UH offensive and defensive starters go head-to-head.
Perhaps one of the more entertaining battles of the day featured Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Patrick Edwards going up against C-USA Newcomer of the Year D.J. Hayden. Both players shared in the day's success, including a great leaping breakup by Hayden on a fade pattern.
Of course Edwards had his fair share of catches, including an over-the-shoulder grab down the sidelines.
One key area for UH in a couple of weeks will be the play of the offensive line. Jacolby Ashworth earned second team All-Conference USA honors at left tackle and will face one of the country's top defensive units, led by All-American Devon Still. The fifth-year senior had 17 tackles for loss from his defensive tackle spot, including 4.5 sacks. He was a finalist for the prestigious Bednarik, Nagurski and Outland trophies and was a first team All-American by virtually every publication.
Practice for UH continues Wednesday through Friday. The team will depart Friday afternoon for the holiday break. The club returns to practice on Dec. 27.
